It looks like some sort of a fiber plastic or a decorated litmus paper. Neither of which gives life though. Damn that's hard!

I'm afraid its not like that. I'd like to think that I'm lazy using my brain.. ..
I just happen to have used one of those saws when I was a kid. I use help my grandfather sharpen this kind of saw in the exact same position showed in the image.
